Eric Davis, WCO for Greene County and now all of Washington Co. was at our March meeting. Eric reported on all the upcoming opening days for trout fishing; Apr. 11th for mentored youth, statewide and Apr. 18th opening day statewide. We are reminded that life jackets are mandatory until April 30 when in a canoe, kayak, or boat less than 16ft.in length.

Trout have been stocked at Dutch Fork and Canonsburg, both will be stocked again before opening day; check the PFBC website for details Biologists have completed a survey of Dutch Fork Lake and it looks really good for big bass but not so good for panfish. It seems the gizzard shad are competing with the panfish and keeping them from getting very big. Details are on the website. We talked about the trout in the classroom program, although not authorized, there are 5 schools raising catfish. Eric mentioned HB-808 which will allow the Fish Commission to raise license fees; it has passed the House and is in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

A Basic boating course will be offered for free on April 4th at the Monongahela Fire Department on Main St. In Monongahela. The course starts at 10:00 am and a lunch break will be provided. You may bring your own lunch. Pre-registration is requested. Email erdavis@pa.gov to register. This course is required of anyone born after June 1st of 1982 who wants to operate a 25 hp or greater motor boat. To keep up with what's going in with the Fish commission check out their Facebook page.

We voted on the proxy issues that will be tabulated at the PFSC conference this weekend, March 14 & 15. The vote was as follows:

  1. Do you support extending the archery deer season to the Friday before the Saturday rifle bear season? NO
  2. Do you support the PGC's proposal to keep the opening day of rifle deer season the Saturday after Thanksgiving, especially since you will also be able to hunt that Sunday, giving us 2 extra days to hunt? YES
  3. Did you personally (or a majority of your club members) participate in the Saturday rifle deer season opener? YES
  4. What are your thoughts on having 3 weekends (Saturday and Sunday) in 2020 to hunt? LIKE IT
  5. Do you agree with the PGC's decision to limit the 3 approved Sundays to big game only? NO
  6. Should the PFSC pursue having additional species that are already in season (except migratory birds due to federal guidelines) approved for harvest during the 3 approved Sundays? YES
